  11.     We need to buy a (much needed) new laser printer, and we have
  12. a good idea of which one we want.  The problem now is finding out if
  13. my Amiga 2000 and the Lexmark Optra Rt+ are "compatible."  When I say
  14. compatible, I mean is there a driver out there for this particular
  15. printer for the Amiga.  Or if not a specific driver, a generic driver
  16. that supports some of the Optra Rt+'s features.  These key features
  17. being 1200dpi resolution, dual paper trays, and duplexing.
  18.     I'm certain I won't have any trouble getting drivers for the
  19. IBM clone and even old Mac Plus we have, but before I make this kind
  20. of purchase, I need to be sure my A2000 (and depending on the future
  21. Amiga market, an A4000T *may* enter the mix) will end up turning out
  22. inferior output.

  24.     I'm also interested in knowing what kind of networking
  25. environment exist that would allow my Amiga, IBM clone, and Mac share
  26. resources (i.e. mass storage, backup, printer, etc.).  If I can afford
  27. it, I'd rather have the printer networked than use a dinky A-B-C
  28. switch.  How well do Amigas integrate with other platforms' hardware
  29. and software on a LAN.
  30.     I've also heard something about this Siamese thing that HiSoft
  31. or somebody is working on.  What's the dirt on it.  Will it help solve
  32. the printer problem by redirecting printer output through the IBM side
  33. or am I overestimating what Siamese is capable of (my knowledge of the
  34. Siamese is very limited)

  36.     My A2000 could also use a bit of an overhaul.  It really needs
  37. a decent accelerator and hard drive controller.  The problem I'm
  38. having is that I know next to nothing about accelerators for the
  39. A2000.  When it comes to accelerators, there is plenty of information
  40. to be had if you have an A1200 or A4000.  Or if you want to dish out
  41. close to $1600+ (the "+" being a SCSI controller) on an 060 based
  42. A2000 accelerator. On top of a new printer, it's just too much of a
  43. stretch.  I was hoping to settle for an 030 or even 040 based
  44. accelerator with SCSI (2?).

  46.     As explanation for these questions, and to lead into my next.
  47. My father, mother, and I are hoping to start a small publishing
  48. company and to publish a mathematical text by the end of summer.  I'd
  49. like to use my Amiga as much as possible for this task.  I figure I
  50. can best show my support for Amiga if I (we) start a business centered
  51. around it.  So while I might need to use an IBM for some things, and a
  52. Mac for others, I want to focus on my Amiga.  What I need to know
  53. about now, is what the Amiga can offer in desktop publishing.  I've
  54. read some about PageStream, but that was mostly bug reports in some of
  55. the newsgroups.  What I need to know is what it and other software can
  56. do with regard to DTP.
  57.     We could probably use a vector drawing program for
  58. illustration, depending on how well the DTP software does the job.  Or
  59. possibly software to generate 2D (possibly 3D) plots that can be
  60. incorporated during page layout.
